Cunning Cat Moves

Just like other members of the family, your cat will have adjustments to make when relocating. But good planning can help you minimize your kitty's trauma. Here are some tips for smoothing the transition.

Before:
  • Check your new locale's ordinances on cat ownership.
  • Make sure your cat is up to date on shots and ask your veterinarian about sedation during the trip. Get a copy of veterinary records.
  • Feed your cat four to six hours before departure.
  • Place kitty on a clean box of litter shortly before leaving. (Cats will often void on clean litter to mark their territory.)

During:
  • Carry proof of vaccination.
  • Tag your cat with moving information, including a phone number to call if kitty is found.
  • Pack some of your cat's favorite toys and treats, but feed sparingly while traveling to avoid motion sickness.
  • Bring drinking water from your old home to avoid an upset tummy. If kitty seems so nervous she won't drink, squirt a few drops in her mouth from a veterinary syringe to see if she's interested.
  • Keep your cat in a pet carrier while moving; let kitty roam inside the car only during stops.

After:
  • Unpack your cat's bowls, food and litter box right away; put them in rooms that correspond to those in your old home.
  • Check with local government on any licensing requirements.
  • Make an appointment with a new veterinarian for an introduction and assessment.
